...Orally, copaiba balsam is well tolerated when used as a food additive.
In doses of 5 grams or greater, copaiba balsam can cause serious adverse effects.
Most Common Adverse Effects:
Topically: Contact dermatitis.
Serious Adverse Effects (Rare):
Orally: Doses of 5 grams or more have been reported to cause diarrhea, shivers, stomach pain, tremor, and vomiting.
Dermatologic ...When applied topically, copaiba balsam can cause contact dermatitis with erythema, a papular or vesicular rash, urticaria, and petechiae. The rash may leave brown spots after healing (18).
Gastrointestinal ...Orally, copaiba balsam in single doses of 5 grams or more has been reported to cause stomach pain, vomiting, and diarrhea (11,18).
Neurologic/CNS ...Orally, copaiba balsam in repeated doses of 5 grams or more has been reported to cause shivering, tremor, and insomnia (18).
